Easter is the demonstration of God that life is essentially spiritual and timeless

Easter is a major religious festival of Christians that is celebrated in a grand manner with a big party time celebration. Every nation has its own way of celebrating a particular festivity. Every country has some peculiar traditions and customs. For example it is the tradition of America to conduct special Easter parades, where men and women flaunt their special costumes and colorful bonnets. The person who leads the parade can be spotted holding Easter candle or cross in his/her hand. It is interesting to explore facts about Easter traditions in USA.
Here are some ideas about Easter customs and traditions-
  • In the New Orleans, it is a trend of conducting an annual Easter carnival called 'Mardi Gras', which features lot of fun activities like parade, jazz music bands and a bumper party.
  • A must play Easter game for American kids is Easter egg roll.
  • A special dish for Easter springtime in USA is baked ham, potatoes and vegetables. Another most demanding recipe is hot cross buns.
  • It was in the early 1700's, when for the first time, eggs were dyed and the credit for starting this practice in America can be attributed to Pennsylvania Dutch (German) settlers.
  • As a part of Easter traditions in the US, sunrise services are held and the prime motive is to include various Christian religious groups in this event.
  • Painting the Easter eggs and then conducting Easter egg hunt games for the kids is what most American parents do on the Easter week.

Infinite USB plug is a big idea for small conveniences

It’s a common problem in computing, but it’s especially true for laptops: there just aren’t enough USB ports to accommodate all of the chargers, dongles and cables that a modern, connected lifestyle needs to take into account.

Designer Jiang Gonglue came to a pretty simple yet genius solution about how to solve the problem of missing USB ports. He invented the USB cable which, when it is plugged into a USB port, immediately becomes port itself so, theoretically, you could attach infinite number of USB cables to your single USB port.

What I love about this design is, like most good designs, it’s easily actionable today. In fact, Gonglue has chosen to render his idea after the fashion of Apple’s own USB connectors… and in truth, it’s very hard to see what’s stopping Apple from shipping out smart new iPod cables like this with their next hardware refresh. Not that they will, mind you, but dare to dream.

Another 25 Years of Dot-Com

The .com suffix might just be one of the commonest things you would come across in your daily life. However, did you know that March 15 marked the 25th anniversary of the registration of the first domain name ever?

Back in 1985, March 15 to be precise, a small computer manufacturer from Massachusetts, US quietly registered a domain name called Symbolics.com. Back then, it might have not even made it to the local newspaper as a small headline. However, 25 years and over 200,000,000 registrations later, Symbolics.com is in the headlines again for obvious reasons. While the company no longer exists, Symbolics.com is still live. The site was sold to its current owner, XF.com in 2009 and now serves as a blog.

The world today sees over 600,000 new domain registrations every single day! Back in the 80 s, the second domain name after Symbolics.com was registered a month later. By 1987, the number of domains had increased to 100. Most of the world's popular domain names didn t even exist back then. The Googles, Yahoos and the Facebooks are just a recent phenomenon. According to a latest ITIF (Information Technology and Innovation Foundation) study, the dotcom domain contributes 400 billion dollars in annual economic activity! This is expected to rise to a staggering 950 billion dollars by 2020. VeriSign also has some interesting statistics about the type of dotcoms in existence today. For example, 11.9 million dotcoms are e-commerce and online business websites, 4.3 million are entertainment-related sites and 1.8 million are sports-related sites, according to VeriSign. In all, there are about 80 million dotcoms.

You might want to check the website,(yet another dotcom) which has bee set up to oversee the 25th anniversary celebrations of the dotcom.

Transfer cutting board keeps kitchen benchtops clean

The Transfer cutting board helps a novice chef look like a professional--

I’m not sure about TV celebrity chefs any more…nothing personal, but they have really raised the bar when it comes to preparing food for guests. Are we expected to smear, tower or stack all our food - or do we just arrange it in one messy heap? Who knows? However, if you do want to look like a professional - the Transfer board could help. Its simple but clever design helps you move chopped food to a single plate quickly and effortlessly - which will make it easier to cook…and to impress.

The Transfer cutting board is made from solid beech which has been oiled with biological linseed oil. You simply insert your plate and then slide your freshly prepared ingredients on to it. Then you are ready for the next ingredient. It can fit a plate with a diameter of 23cm (9.1”) and up to 2.7cm (1.1”) in height.
The board is produced in Berlin, Germany by designers Chris & Ruby

Corky the Kinetic Mouse - no batteries required

Corky from designer Adele Peters, a finalist is this year's Greener Gadgets Design Competition...

Freeing oneself from the shackles of wired PC periphery does come at a cost. In order to power such liberation, users rely on batteries. Even rechargeable ones impede workflow when they run out of juice. Designer Adele Peters proposes capturing the energy from moving, clicking and scrolling and using it to power Corky, a kinetic mouse made from recycled materials.
A finalist in the Greener Gadgets Design Competition, the eco-friendly peripheral has an element within the body to harvest energy from movement, a similar setup is fitted to the scroll wheel and a piezoelectric element stores energy from each click of the left and right buttons. As its name suggests, the outer shell is made from waterproofed recycled cork and all the plastics are from recycled stock too. Regional material sourcing and assembly and end of life recycling add more green points to its credentials.
Precise details of internal electrics were not outlined in the design so it's not known whether Corky will be able to harvest enough energy from user movement to enable consistent operation, such things will no doubt be answered as and when a prototype results.
The concept just missed the bronze medal in the audience vote at the Greener Gadgets 2010 Conference in New York last month, coming fourth behind a USB device charger that is powered by interior light, a rocking chair kinetic device charger and the winner, a mobile phone app that provides consumers with pertinent food information from local growers.

Maple Cell Phone Concept

The Maple Phone from 2 designers that won Silver at the International Design Excellence Awards 2008 (IDEA) competition for the Free Wind, best room air conditioner design.
Hyun Jin Yoon and Eun Hak Lee created a camera phone concept covered in thin wooden film, with touch sensitive buttons that light up through the housing when you touch the phone.

The cell phone measures 4.5 x 10.4 x 9.8 cm and is a slider with functions like calling, texting, MP3 player and digital camera. It provides basic cell phone functionalities in a cool and unique handset inspiring special emotion with its soft feel and a natural look.
The touch-sensitive sensors located in the back of the housing turn on the backlight, responding to your finger touch, bringing the wood to life. It would probably use the capacitive touch technology, which is a special panel coated with indium tin oxide or a similar material capable to conduct continuous electrical current across the sensor.
Maple LCD display reveals itself from back as you slide the phone.

This wood phone concept would be manufactured at lower costs and it'd surely be available at an affordable price, much lower than the 3500 Euro Gresso phones.
Other wood phones use special plastics instead of wood, both for the keep it green idea and for an easier manufacturing process.

Brodmann Blades - the table tennis paddle you wear

The equipment used for table tennis is so basic, you would think there was no way of streamlining it further... There’s a table, a net, a ball and two bare-bones paddles - what could you possibly get rid of? As it turns out, those paddles don’t really need their handles. And according to the makers of Brodmann Blades, eliminating the handle and sticking your hand inside the paddle will make you a better player.
Each Broadmann Blade consists of two paddle faces, a front and a back, with a gap between them. You just insert your hand in the gap between the faces (sandwich-style), stick your thumb through the thumb hole on the side, and wear it like a glove.
Why is this this a good idea? According to the company website, there are several reasons. First of all, they say, the Blades are more comfortable than traditional paddles because you’re not constantly clutching a handle. You also get a lot more sensory feedback, as you can feel exactly where and how the ball hits the paddle. They’re also supposedly more intuitive, as you just move your hand towards the ball, as opposed to allowing for a paddle that sticks out from your hand. The result of these benefits, we’re told, include better ball control, a faster, easier game, and a superior backhand

Broadmann Blades are not yet approved for international competition, although they apparently received a good reaction when recently presented to the International Table Tennis Federation. Company representative Fredi Brodmann told us that they expect the ITTF to approve the Blades later this year.
If you’re interested in picking up a pair, they only come in a set that includes two paddles, four balls, two toweled wristbands and a carrying case. The whole thing costs $US100, and is available through several retailers listed on the Brodmann Blades website

Sony Vaio Conceptual Transparent Screen Laptop

I received an email from a friend of mine about the new latest conceptual technology gadgets which we expect will be coming out in the market soon.
It included a Sony Vaio laptop which has a transparent screen. You can see through the screen if the laptop is off.

What’s the future laptop will look like? The Japanese consumer electronics giant, Sony has introduced its new VAIO Zoom that looks like future concept. It’s a cool, sleek and stylish notebook which features a touch-sensitive keypad, as well as a holographic glass screen that able to go transparent when turned off.

For sure, an innovative and cool holographic glass screen that involved in VAIO Zoom doesn’t really exist in the market yet, it’s just a concept for now. Anyway, it’s pretty sure that many consumers would like to see a high-tech and fantastic laptop like this in the future.

The ten worst passwords on the web

The Ten worst Passwords on the web

You’re not fooling anyone with that “123456” password of yours. “Password” isn’t much better, and sorry ladies, but “princess” is also no good. These are among the findings in a report released by Imperva, a data security firm that analyzed 32 million passwords recently exposed in the Rockyou.com breach. Not only did they identify the most common, and thus easily-guessable passwords, but they also suggested some effective methods for creating secure ones.
Rockyou.com is a website where users can develop apps to use on social networking sites. Last December, a hacker gained access to all of Rockyou’s members’ usernames, email addresses and passwords (which had been stored in plain, unencrypted text) and posted the passwords to the Internet. Given that many people use the same username and password for all of their online dealings, such as banking, the results could have been disastrous. Fortunately, the perpetrator seemed to be mainly interested in exposing Rockyou’s insufficient security, as they didn’t post the usernames or emails.

Imperva analyzed the hacked data, and compiled their findings in the Consumer Password Worst Practices report. Of the 32 million passwords involved, the ten most common were:

  • 123456
  • 12345
  • 123456789
  • Password
  • iloveyou
  • princess
  • rockyou
  • 1234567
  • 12345678
  • abc123

It was found that almost half of the members used names, slang words, proper words, or trivial passwords such as consecutive digits, or adjacent keys on the keyboard.

So, what sort of password SHOULD people be using?

Imperva made the following recommendations:

  • It should contain at least eight characters (30% of users had passwords that were six letters or less)
  • It should contain a mix of four different types of characters (i.e: upper case, lower case, numbers, symbols)
  • It should not be a name, word, or contain any part of your name or email address

The report also suggests using a different password for every website, not sharing your passwords with third parties, and using the first letters of each word in a sentence as your password (For instance, “this little piggy went to market” would be “tlpWENT2m”).
“The data provides a unique glimpse into the way that users select passwords and an opportunity to evaluate the true strength of passwords as a security mechanism,” said Imperva CTO Amichai Shulman. “Never before has there been such a high volume of real-world passwords to examine.”

AirMouse - the mouse that fits you like a glove!

It’s no secret... Studies have shown that excessive Mouse usage can cause repetitive stress injuries. Unfortunately for most of us, “excessive” can mean anything more than a few hours a day. Fortunately, however, there are alternative styles of mice out there designed to be easier on the hands and arms. One of the more interesting ones to come along in a while is the AirMouse, made by Canadian firm Deanmark Ltd. What makes it unique is the fact that you wear it like a glove.

Deanmark founders Mark Bajramovic and Oren Tessler met in university, where Mark learned first-hand (no pun intended) what it’s like to OD on mousing. “Half way through our first year, I developed a computer mouse related RSI (Repetitive Stress Injury) and lost the use of my right hand and arm for several weeks,” he tells us. “Numbness, pain, most things that you hear about with RSI’s, I had it.” Later that semester, Mark and Oren heard about an ergonomic mouse being marketed in Europe. While they thought that particular product wasn’t perfect, it got them thinking about designing their own. The AirMouse is the result.

The wireless mouse utilizes an optical laser, and can run for a week without recharging. According to the company website, the clinically-tested product works by aligning itself with the ligaments of your hand and wrist. This lets you keep your hand in a neutral position, and transmits more of your vector force than would be possible with a regular mouse. Not only does this make it easier on your hand, but it increases your mousing speed and accuracy as well. The mouse is also designed to remain inactive until your hand is placed in a neutral, flat position, so you can easily go back and forth between typing and mousing. Other ergonomic designs have strayed from the AirMouse’s style of traditional flat, one-dimensional mousing, but Mark and Oren’s market research indicated that consumers tend to reject such products.

The AirMouse should be available for purchase within the next 6 to 12 months, at a price of $US129.
